Christchurch foodbank 'gutted' after thieves steal food meant for hundreds of needy families

A food bank in Christchurch is “utterly devastated,” “furious” and “completely shattered” after two individuals stole frozen and chilled provisions intended for numerous families who are struggling.

On Sunday evening, around 10:20 pm, two people wearing balaclavas and gloves forced open the locks of Hoon Hay Foodbank's walk-in freezer and chiller.

"Do you have a conscience?" the organisation asked in an open message to the perpetrators, posted on social media.

You have exhausted all stocks of meat as well as frozen and chilled products meant for distribution to numerous families who truly require assistance with putting food on their tables... all they needed to do was send a message and reserve a food package if they were in need.

The posting raised doubts about whether the thieves genuinely needed the food, indicating that the quantity stolen implied it was likely to be resold.

"We have 121 [families] booked in this week already with more to be responded to and you have taken from the mouths of every member of every one of these households."

Anyone in the region who noticed bulk food advertised for sale or spotted any black and green supermarket crates in odd places was urged to contact the food bank.

The loss of food from a food bank was deemed uninsurable, hence those losses would not be compensated.

"To those whānau [sic] booked in this week who rely on what we can pack into a food parcels [sic] we are genuinely sorry that the items sometimes needed the most won't be included due to these [two]."

The organization was welcoming contributions of food to compensate for what was removed from its site on McCarthy Street.
